The rain poured down for much of the 1970 Le Mans, but that wasn’t enough to keep the movie cameras away. Much of the action from the race was used in the 1971 Steve McQueen film of the same name; with the Porsche 917 playing a supporting role.

Here we see the 917K, driven by the team of Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, cruising through the deluge on their way to claim Porsche’s first-ever win at Le Mans.

Hermann, who was 43 at the time, promised his wife before the race that if he won, he would immediately retire from racing. He had only been half-joking, but after having witnessed too many tragic deaths in the past, and having just earned the most dramatic win of his career, he decided to make good on his promise and finish his career with a happy ending.

If someone were to make a list of the greatest race cars of all time, the Porsche 917 would almost certainly be on it. The car gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans, and became revered for its high power output with speeds in excess of 220mph. So iconic was it, that the car played a leading role in Steve McQueen’s 1971 film, ‘Le Mans’. But it was in the previous year – 1970 – that the Porsche Salzburg 917 won the famous endurance race for the first time, driven by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood. That is the car we now present as an NFT Turnaround.

One of the most iconic racing cars of all time, the Ford GT40 was born out of motorsport’s most infamous grudge. After failing to secure possession of Enzo Ferrari’s much celebrated company, Henry Ford II returned to America empty-handed and declared his desire to crush Ferrari at Le Mans. The result was a car that was to defeat all before it. In 1966, the Mk.II version of the car dominated the 24 hours of Le Mans, finishing first, second and third and it continued winning the race for the next three years.

"The Ford GT40 was designed in the 1960s specifically to beat Ferrari, a motivation also captured in a Hollywood film featuring the 24h of Le Mans, 1966. But the Ford GT40’s impact on motorsport ended up being far greater than either company anticipated. In 1966, the MK II version of the car dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing first, second and third… and variations of the GT40 continued with the winning ways for the next three years.

Officially licensed and endorsed by 24H of Le Mans, a Fine Art created by European collective Automobilist.

Depicted in the Fine Art is Ford’s staged finish of the Le Mans in 1966, one of the most controversial and mysterious chapters in the GTs saga.  We’re not going to give you a blow by blow account of the 24-hour race, but it’s enough to know that in the closing stages, Ford were in the top three places, with the GT40 Mk IIs, crewed by Ken Miles/Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren/Chris Amon and Ronnie Bucknum/Dick Hutcherson. The team management decided they did not want the drivers racing each other, and decided upon a formation finish.

However, the organisers of Le Mans had their own technicality in place, and awarded the win to the team that had driven the most kilometres - which was the black #2 GT driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon as they had covered the most distance within the 24 hours, after being placed 40 yards behind Miles at the start.
